It’s Village Halls Week from Monday 25th to Friday 29th January – and village halls across England are being encouraged to sign an online record to mark 100 years of rural community action. 

Keeping vulnerable people warm and safe in their homes – FREE training for frontline workers and volunteers

With the new lockdown, even more people will be having to stay at home and turn on their heating – if they can afford to. Now more than ever it’s important to raise awareness to vulnerable consumers of how to stay warm, how to use less energy, and how to pay less.   Are your staff and volunteers aware of the support available? CAN is offering free 90-minute online training to help people provide support and information where needed.

ThinkingFuel: buying heating oil collectively – and helping the community at the same time

Many of you reading this will know about ThinkingFuel, our collective heating oil buying scheme. And you’ll know that the aim is to help support householders across Norfolk who depend on heating oil to heat their homes, and for whom the unregulated cost of heating oil is a constant worry.

Village halls and community buildings are at the heart of our rural and urban communities. 2020 has been a tough year, with lockdown and compulsory closures for all.  However, the Covid-19 pandemic has provided a special opportunity for those involved in running village halls across the East of England to share experiences, ideas, opportunities, and resources.

At CAN we work closely with the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk on the Big Switch and Save energy switching project.  There are three important news items about Big Switch and Save that we’d like to convey to West Norfolk residents, and we’d be grateful for the help of VCSE groups and organisations working in the area to help spread the word.

Safeguarding - everyone’s responsibility

Every VCSE organisation has a duty to safeguard volunteers, staff members, participants and donors, and to have appropriate and proportionate policies and procedures in place. Likewise, staff and volunteers themselves need to aware be aware of their individual responsibilities to themselves and to their clients, service users and hirers.  

West Norfolk VCSE Hub meeting 8th December

The next West Norfolk VCSE Hub Meeting takes place on Tuesday 8th December 2020 between 10:30 and 12:00 on the platform Microsoft Teams. 

Safeguarding and Village Halls

The organisers of activities and events are responsible for ensuring people’s safety and wellbeing during their time there, but it doesn’t mean the village hall volunteers and staff are absolved from responsibility. it’s helpful to have a closer look at why it’s especially important for hall committees to have the right policies and procedures in place.

At CAN we help and support a great many community projects to find the funding they need to make their vision a reality. Finding the right funder can be a minefield, and a complex process that takes time and commitment.
