The latest Charity Digital Skills Report has revealed encouraging progress in digital adoption across the voluntary sector, while highlighting the continued need for investment in skills, training and funding.

According to the report, 81% of charities say they have made progress with their digital capabilities over the past year, and 79% are now using AI in some form. However, many organisations are still struggling to make the most of digital technology due to limited resources and confidence.

Some of the report's key findings include:

  • 63% of charities say squeezed finances are their biggest barrier to digital progress.
  • 56% identify a lack of AI skills as the main obstacle to adopting AI more effectively.
  • Only 28% have a formal digital strategy in place.
  • 35% say they do not trust AI tools – more than double the figure reported last year.
  • 44% say funding for staff training is their biggest digital investment need.
  • One-third of charities believe their board has poor AI skills, highlighting the importance of leadership development alongside staff training.

The findings reinforce the importance of investing in digital skills and building confidence with emerging technologies, ensuring charities can continue to deliver services efficiently while adapting to a rapidly changing digital landscape.
