Millions of people across Britain are set to gain essential digital skills as the government takes urgent action to tackle digital exclusion. With more aspects of daily life such as booking GP appointments, applying for jobs, or managing finances moving online, having access to technology and digital know-how is more important than ever.

To address this challenge, the government has launched a Digital Inclusion Action Plan, which will provide funding for local initiatives aimed at supporting those most affected by digital exclusion, including the elderly and low-income households. This initiative will help ensure that no one is left behind in an increasingly digital world.

Why Digital Inclusion Matters

  • Research has shown that those who are digitally excluded often face higher costs for essential services like home insurance, train travel and groceries, paying up to 25% more than those who shop online.
  •
  • Moreover, businesses across the country struggle to find candidates with the digital skills they need, limiting economic growth and job opportunities. By boosting digital access and skills, this plan will not only help individuals but also strengthen businesses and the wider economy.

Key Actions to Close the Digital Divide

  • Funding for local projects: Charities, local councils and combined authorities will receive government funding to run digital inclusion programmes that provide skills training and access to technology.
  • Providing devices to those in need: In partnership with the Digital Poverty Alliance, laptops will be distributed to people who currently lack digital access.
  • Support from major tech companies: Leading technology firms are stepping up, with Google and BT offering digital skills training and Vodafone committing to help one million people by providing connectivity, affordable services and community upskilling.

The Future of Digital Britain

With 1.6 million people in the UK currently offline and a quarter of the population struggling with online services, this plan is a crucial step toward ensuring everyone can fully participate in the digital world. By breaking down barriers to technology, Britain can unlock new economic opportunities, empower individuals, and build a fairer, more digitally connected society.

The government’s commitment to digital inclusion will pave the way for a future where technology is a force for good—helping people access essential services, find employment and improve their quality of life.
