The research, commissioned by the Warm This Winter campaign, paints a stark picture of the nation’s housing crisis, highlighting the urgent need for government action.

While the Government has announced that a Warm Homes Plan will help improve people’s homes in years to come, it is feared that this will be too late for the one-in-five people across the UK living in such conditions now.

Health Risks

Cold, damp homes are not just uncomfortable—they are dangerous. Living in poorly insulated and ventilated spaces exposes residents to numerous health risks. The NHS warns that such conditions can lead to respiratory issues, cardiovascular diseases, and even worsen mental health problems. The prevalence of damp and mould can further weaken the immune system and increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The Facts

Recent data* from Warm This Winter revealed that nearly three-quarters (72%) of UK adults support prioritising the worst-insulated homes for upgrades. Almost half (47%) expressed concerns about staying warm this winter, while 46% worried about the strain on the NHS as cold-related health issues rise. You can find out more here and here.
