Environment Agency Releases Updated Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Data

The Environment Agency has released updated data for the National Flood Risk Assessment (NaFRA) and introduced a new National Coastal Erosion Risk Map (NCERM). These updates provide a more accurate representation of flood and coastal erosion risks across England, with potential changes in risk levels for some homes and businesses.

​National Flood Risk Assessment (NaFRA) Update

Last revised in 2018, the updated NaFRA now offers a comprehensive view of the current and future flood risks posed by rivers, the sea, and surface water. The latest enhancements allow individuals and businesses to better understand their flood risk and take necessary precautions. In England, residents can check long-term flood risk levels in their areas and sign up for flood warnings where available.

Key improvements to the NaFRA include:

• Future flood risk assessment – Incorporating climate change projections to provide a more accurate depiction of potential future risks.
• Flood depth estimations – Indicating the severity of flooding both under present conditions and with climate change considerations.

New National Coastal Erosion Risk Map (NCERM)

For the first time, a nationwide assessment of coastal erosion risk has been published. The updated NCERM presents a detailed outlook on coastal erosion, both now and in the future, allowing coastal communities to make informed decisions about property resilience and long-term planning.

The Environment Agency’s updated risk data is being released in phases, incorporating new modelling techniques and climate change scenarios to ensure the most accurate information is available.

Additionally, property owners can check their flood risk by entering their postcode into an online tool, making it easier to determine the level of threat and take precautionary measures if necessary.
