Have you noticed the power of storytelling? Ever wondered how films are made, or wanted to try your hand at creating one? Here’s your chance!

Norfolk’s Voluntary Community Sector (VCS) is coming together to leverage the power of storytelling through film, on the back of a fantastic two-day training we delivered in the Summer, in which we co-produced with Civil Society Consulting (CSC) and Norfolk County Council a Shared Vision for Building Connections, Community from the bottom-up. CSC hope to inspire behaviour change across Norfolk through a joint, VCS-led social media campaign, sharing stories of connection and togetherness across Norfolk, modelling the steps in action and celebrating community leadership.

This is the plan:

We’ll teach you how to craft your first short film using a mobile phone - and support you to do so (it’s easier than you think!)
Then, throughout the Spring and Summer, we’ll be collaboratively sharing the stories across social media, in partnership with Jo Cox Foundation and others, and all of you!

Your invitation:

We’re inviting you to join us for an exciting Filmmaking Workshop suitable for complete beginners, as well as those with some degree of experience:

  • In Norwich on Tuesday 4 March at The Shoebox! Sign up here
  • In Dereham on Monday 17 March at Breckland Council Offices. Sign up here

In both cases, the workshop will kick-off at 10:00 (until 16:00). If you can’t take the whole day, just join us 10:00-14:00. Please try to arrive from 9:30/9:45 for coffee so we can start promptly (especially if you didn’t join the Summer workshops, so we can catch you up!)

Whether you’ve never picked up a camera or you’ve got some experience, this workshop is for anyone eager to learn and create. Bring your colleagues, volunteers and service-users: the more stories and voices, the better!

What will you get from it?

  • Unlock Your Creativity: You’ll have the opportunity to use your creativity to plan your own short film (or two!), before going away and capturing and crafting it.
  • Empowerment Through Film: No experience? No problem! We’ll show you how to make a film using just your smartphone – from capturing footage to editing it into a finished piece. You’ll be empowered to use film again and again in your work to convey the messages you want.
  • Strengthened relationships with the Building Connections in Norfolk network: It’s a reunion! We’ll be coming back together with the same brilliant people from across Norfolk as we did in the summer (and then some!) the creative day is an opportunity to strengthen our bonds; in particular we want to welcome in new people from smaller organisations who may benefit from links to larger charities like Age UK and Mind and people at the Council.
  • The Big Picture: Through these workshops, we’re taking the first step to bring Norfolk’s Shared Vision into being. By coming together, you’ll be part of a nationwide movement that celebrates togetherness, hope, and connection. The films you create will be shared as part of a social media campaign across Norfolk, and the UK, amplifying voices and stories that inspire unity in our communities – in partnership with the Jo Cox Foundation and other local partners.

Plus, lunch is on us!

By the end of the day, you’ll:

  • Know how to shoot and edit footage using your smartphone
  • Have a plan in place for your film(s) and a clear vision of the shots you’ll need
  • Feel more confident about the process of filmmaking.

What to bring:

  • A smartphone for filming
  • A notepad (or laptop) to plan your film and take notes

Thank you for helping our film-making dreams come true. We can’t wait to see how this manifests!
