Communities vs Coronavirus: the big impact of Good Neighbour and Mutual Aid schemes

A report from the New Local Government Network (NLGN)  states that a huge proportion of vulnerable people needing help during the pandemic has been directly supported by the proliferation of thousands of the spontaneous, voluntary Mutual Aid groups that have emerged.

All of Norfolk’s communities, rural or urban, share a common characteristic. They have histories.  Community Action Norfolk was asked to support the project in recognition of our skills and experience in working with community groups in developing local projects.

We are regularly reporting on the wonderful achievements of Good Neighbour Schemes and community support groups – many of which have been born in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  CAN’s Development Officers have been advising and supporting many of these enterprises.  Such a group is Sprowston Supporting Our Community Together, which has joined our Good Neighbour Scheme network. Their chosen title describes exactly what they do.

One less lonely voice is a triumph – combatting social isolation

Loneliness Awareness Week (15th to 19th June) is highlighting one of the great social scourges of our modern society.  Community Action Norfolk is at the forefront of combating social isolation across our county, with a range of projects encouraging and enabling individuals to become involved in activities in their local communities.

CAN has joined with other prominent public and voluntary sector agencies from across Norfolk to warn residents to be extra vigilant of new and existing scams during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Good Neigbour Schemes at the forefront of community response

CAN’s long-standing network of Good Neighbour Schemes across Norfolk was well-placed to mobilise its members to respond quickly to local need = and the past few weeks have seen the Schemes welcome many new volunteers join in response to the COVID-19 crisis. 

How helpful is the Chancellor's Charity Support Package to rural communities?

CAN is an member of the national ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England) network.  ACRE is very active at national level in helping formulate government strategies for supporting community groups. Right now ACRE is working with other national charities to help Government get to grips with the impact of Covid-19 on rural people and community organisations throughout England.
