Did you know you could be saving up to 20 litres of water each day by making some simple changes?

CAN are working in partnership with Anglian Water to highlight how you can save water around your houses, village halls and community centres. It is estimated that we could each be saving up to 20 litres per day - this is an incredible amount per person! Anglian Water have a handy guide where you can calculate your water through a quick quiz usage here.

If recent events have taught us anything, it’s how precious our water is and how important our communities are.  We are committed to doing our bit to protect the environment and here’s how we can help you to save water.  Saving water tackles climate change, but it can also save you money too.

  • Run your dishwasher on the eco setting
  • Only run your dishwasher when it it full, once a day
  • Fill a jug of water and keep it in the fridge instead of running a tap to get cold water
  • Only run your washing machine when it is full

In the bathroom:

  • Try to have 4 minute showers – use a shower timer
  • Avoid using the bath
  • Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth/washing your face
  • Avoid using a power shower

And in your community space and garden try:

  • Weeding - as well as tidying up your borders removing weeds will help your plants get more nutrients and moisture over the summer months
  • Fertilising - adding an organic matter like manure is a natural fertiliser to help improve the soil condition and add in extra nutrients
  • Mulching - top your borders with bark chippings, pebbles or stones. Not only is it decorative mulching can lock in moisture and suppress weeds
  • Rainwater harvesting – add a water butt to your garden to make the most of the rain when it does come
  • Try to refrain from using a hose in your garden – using the water from your water butt instead or even a watering can makes a big difference
  • If you need to water the garden with a hose, try a water saving spray device instead!

Most of the general advice Anglia Water have put together for ways to save water around your home can also be applied to your village halls, community areas, or the property of your service users - it is worth taking the time to think about and make some small changes around the areas that you can.
