COVID-19 lockdown might be easing slightly but energy costs continue to be a big worry for people as the cost of staying at home for longer, coupled with the winter temperatures, sees bills for heating and lighting rise. 

We’re delivering just three more of our popular FREE online training sessions for frontline staff and volunteers working with the most vulnerable residents in our communities. These sessions have been developed to equip you and your colleagues with the knowledge to advise your clients and service users on helping them reduce their energy usage and thereby make their utility bills more manageable. We’ll also be advising on how to signpost people to switch their supplier with the aim of getting a better deal all year round. 

The sessions are just 90 mins. long, so they are easy to fit into your working day! There are three remaining dates to choose from: 

  • 12th March 14:00-15:30 
  • 17 March     13:00-14:30 
  • 22 March     11:00-12:30

The training will help you: 

  • help vulnerable people save energy and money in their homes   
  • help them understand what support is available to them   
  • help people find the cheapest supplier   
  • know where to signpost clients to and understand what else they might need to consider

Now more important than ever 

Many households whose occupants have lost their jobs due to COVID, or are furloughed, or on short hours, are more likely to struggle to meet fuel bills, a problem made more severe by the lockdowns that have compelled people to spend more time at home. We might be emerging from lockdown, but people’s bills are still rising. 

Fuel poverty defined 

There are around 40,000 households in fuel poverty across Norfolk. And around 600 premature deaths are directly attributable to fuel poverty.   

At CAN we are engaged with a range of initiatives that combat fuel poverty across and beyond Norfolk, and understanding the concept of fuel poverty is key to grasping the severity of the problem. 

Basically, a household is said to be in fuel poverty if the occupant(s) are on low incomes and face high costs of keeping adequately warm and other basic energy services. Put another way, if that household has above-average costs for the fuel required to have a warm, well-lit home, with hot water and appliances, these costs leave the household in relative poverty. 

Fuel poverty is driven by three main factors: 

  • household income 
  • the current cost of energy 
  • the energy efficiency of the home

 

Many households have cut back on heating bills by putting up with low temperatures or crowding into a single heated room – both of which increase the risk of spreading COVID-19. And the colder weather – which is not yet past - is thought to increase the virus’s severity and spread.
