The COVID-19 lockdown means many of us are at home for most of the day.  We’re using more gas and electricity. And that means, ultimately, higher energy bills.  There’s never been a better time to think about changing energy provider and, after thinking about it, actually doing it.

Energy companies Ovo, Bulb and EDF Energy have been analyisng changes in energy consumption across the UK. Their research shows that household energy use is at present nearly one-third higher than usual during the middle of the day. Ironically, data from the National Grid suggests that energy consumption is actually lower at the beginning of the working day because people are not grabbing breakfast and having a shower prior to the daily commute or school run.  Overall, the actual demand for electricity is down by around 20 per-cent, because industrial sites are not consuming power. But in our homes we’re definitely using more energy.

Switching with Big Switch and Save

CAN works in partnership with the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk in offering a new kind of energy switching scheme to West Norfolk residents. Big Switch and Save works by inviting the energy companies to come to you, the consumer, to offer the best price deals on electricity and gas.

It’s a kind of ‘reverse auction’ where, instead of the consumer having to look for the best deal, Big Switch and Save gets the energy companies to compete to provide the best deal for local residents. The next auction will be on Tuesday 19 May and you can register to take part in Big Switch and Save here.  You'll need to have details of how much gas and electricity you currently use, which you can find on your energy bills, so it’s a good idea to have those to hand when you register.  

If you know someone who doesn’t have access to email you can register for them - up to five households can register from the same e-mail address in fact. For help registering on-line call 0800 098 8994.

The energy supplier with the best offer on 19 May will be chosen. Then people who have registered will be notified of the best price and can choose whether or not to accept the offer.

It’s straightforward, there really is no catch, no commitment and no obligation.
