England’s village halls provide a space for family and social events, and fitness, social, heath care and educational activities. Their upkeep and improvements to make them fit for purpose for a range of modern activities costs money of course, and the Village Hall Improvement Grant scheme aims to help.

CAN has helped three village halls in Norfolk – at Barton Bendish, East Ruston and Hindolveston - get urgently-needed funding from the Village Hall Improvement Grant scheme.

The scheme is managed by ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England) on behalf of Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) with support from the ACRE Network - of which CAN is a member.  The aim is to help fund the updating and refurbishment of village halls so that they are fit for purpose and provide activities which seek to achieve one or more of the following outcomes for their communities:

  • improved health and wellbeing/reduction in loneliness
  • a positive impact on the environment
  • support for the local rural economy

Barton Bendish’s hall needed disabled toilets, new heating and floor and an enlarged kitchen, along with a possible building extension. Hindolveston required the complete reinstatement of the entrance to the front of the building and East Ruston, an historic Arts & Crafts building, needed a new roof.  CAN helped the three village halls secure a grand combined total of £88,000 towards their improvements and refurbishments. Please note, however that the fund has closed for the time being - but you can complete an Expression of Interest Form in anticipation of further funding becoming available so that you can be contacted if and when further funding becomes available.
